What is a visual field test?

This is a safe and painless ophthalmic examination that delineates the area within the patient’s vision, i.e., the image visible to the patient with the still eye. A perimeter is used when carrying out the test.

Methods of visual field testing:

  • static perimetry – presentation of stationary stimuli of constant size and varying luminance at specific points in the visual field
  • kinetic perimetry – use of test marks moved across the background surface
  • automatic (computer-assisted) perimetry – analysis of the threshold of the retina at various points in relation to its normal level

How is the visual field test carried out?

The patient sits in front of the device with his head resting motionless on the support, staring at a fixed point, observing a bowl in which flashes of light appear. The survey requires concentration, attention and cooperation with the person conducting the evaluation.

Visual field testing is carried out using perimeters (an ophthalmic device). They are used in the dark or in a bright room. Automated perimetry is increasingly being performed to accurately determine retinal sensitivity at a single point.

Indications for visual field testing:

  • for the diagnosis of glaucoma
  • in pathological changes of the optic nerve
  • in diseases of the retina and uvea
  • in diseases of the nervous system

It is a safe test that is ordered by a specialist. It can be performed repeatedly as it is not associated with complications. It is important that it is not performed on young children and elderly people with poor spatial orientation.
