Who are phakic lenses for?

The phakic lens implantation procedure is suitable for patients between 21 and 60 years of age with higher myopia, who have contraindications to laser vision correction.

A stable defect is also important:

  • near-sightedness of -6 to -20 D
  • far-sightedness 0 to +8 D
  • astigmatism up to 6 D

Improvements in vision already occur after the procedure and the recovery process is very fast.

What is the qualifying examination for the phakic lens implantation procedure?

Pre-operative diagnostics include:

  • assessment of the stability of the vision defect
  • refraction test without/with correction (glasses, contact lenses)
  • examination of the anterior segment of the eye
  • examination of the fundus of the eye
  • measurement of the depth of the anterior chamber of the eye
  • endothelial cell assessment
  • corneal topography
  • pupil diameter measurement
  • biometrics
  • pachymetry

Remember that the decision to qualify for phakic lens vision correction surgery is preceded by a comprehensive eye examination.

Advantages of phakic lenses

  • A safe, stable method of correcting major visual defects.
  • Improving comfort without disturbing the patient’s natural lens.
  • Replacing glasses and contact lenses.
  • Durability: a phakic lens lasts 40-50 years in the eye!
  • Reversibility of the procedure: possibility to remove the additional lens at a later age.
  • An alternative for patients who cannot undergo laser vision correction for medical reasons.

How does the phakic lens implantation procedure work?

The phakic lens implantation procedure takes just more than ten minutes. It is performed under local anaesthesia, with the patient remaining fully conscious.

The folded phakic lens is inserted using a special applicator between the iris and the patient’s own lens – through a small 3 mm incision in the cornea. When the phakic lens is placed in the right place, it unfolds and expands. The small size of the incision means that there is no longer a need for sutures.

In most cases, the improvement in vision is almost immediate.

What should I do immediately after a phakic lens implantation procedure?

The dressing on the operated eye remains only until the first follow-up visit, the day after the phakic lens implantation procedure. Anti-inflammatory drops are used in the postoperative period. Excessive physical exertion, rubbing the operated eye and excessive sunlight should be avoided.

What are the contraindications to surgical vision correction with phakic lenses?

  • Age under 21 or over 60.
  • Unstabilised visual defect.
  • Autoimmune diseases.
  • Hormonal changes that impede healing (pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes).
  • Infectious diseases.
  • Eye diseases (glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment).
  • Cancer.
  • Weakening of the body’s immune system.
  • Implanted pacemaker.

The basic prerequisite for the possibility of lens implantation is adequate space in the eye, a measure of which is the anterior chamber depth (ACD) over 2.8 mm.

Phakic lenses or laser?

The choice between phakic lenses and laser correction depends on several factors, including:

  • type of visual impairment
  • the patient’s current state of health

It is worth noting here that phakic lenses are usually offered to people with thin corneas and large visual defects that are impossible to correct by laser. In addition, this procedure is reversible and does not require changes to the corneal geometry.

How much does a phakic lens implant cost?

The cost of the procedure varies primarily according to the type of phakic lens implanted – the price at the SPEKTRUM clinic starts from PLN 7,000. The fee includes, among other things, the necessary laboratory tests, the consultation and subsequent care of the anaesthetist or follow-up visits after the procedure.
