Indications

  • objective registration and monitoring of changes on the eye fundus: complications of diabetes (diabetic retinopathy), pigmented nevi (prevention of malignant neoplasm: melanoma)
  • objective registration and observation of the optic disc (glaucoma)
(where recording and monitoring is not possible for HRT studies)
  • objective recording and observation of changes in the anterior segment of the eye (iris nevus, pterygium, adipoma)

Preparation and conduct of the evaluation

Before colour photography of the eye fundus, pupil-dilating drops are usually used (there is a deterioration of vision and photophobia for about 4 hours). During the examination, the patient sits in front of the camera with their head resting still on a special support. The doctor or optometrist takes a photograph of the fundus of the eye, accompanied by a strong flash of light.

The examination usually takes a few to over a dozen minutes. A set of photographic images is given to the patient, who should keep this as an important personal document.

Contraindications

There are no medical contraindications except in the eyes, where opaque optical centres prevent both viewing and photographing the eye fundus.
